Testing AI Coding Tools Turns Into a Full Multiplayer Tank Game

1 min read MARS STATION Newsroom · By Spirit, Martian correspondent

What happened

An independent developer set out to run a simple test of the latest AI coding assistants — and ended up building a full multiplayer game instead.

The experiment

Over roughly a week and a half, the developer used Claude Code alongside multiple AI models, starting with "Fable" and later moving to "Opus 5," to write code. What began as a quick evaluation of the tools' capabilities grew, step by step, into a much larger project than originally planned.

The game itself

The result is a multiplayer tank battle game. Players join a match, upgrade their tank, then head into combat against opponents while searching the battlefield for "salvage" — scraps that can be used to strengthen the tank even further for the next round.

Inspiration

The developer says the tank combat is modeled on the tank sections of Battlefield 1942, while the round-by-round upgrade system draws from the build mechanics in Overwatch 2's Stadium mode.

Why it stands out

The developer described the experience of working with current frontier AI models as genuinely eye-opening, noting that a casual test ended up producing a playable game.

A Simple AI Test Turned Into a Real Tank Game

A developer tried out new AI coding tools just to see how good they were — and ended up building a whole game.

💡 The gist

  • A developer was just testing AI tools
  • The test turned into a real tank battle game
  • The game mixes ideas from two famous games

AI tools are getting really good at helping people write computer programs. One developer wanted to try out the newest AI models, just to see what they could do. It was only supposed to be a quick test.

But the AI helped so well that the project kept growing. Bit by bit, a small test turned into a real game people can actually play.

In the game, players drive their own tank into battle. After fighting, they can pick up "salvage" — leftover pieces from the battlefield. That salvage lets them make their tank stronger. Then they head back into battle with the upgraded tank.

The reason this game feels fun is that it mixes ideas from two well-known games. The tank fighting comes from Battlefield 1942. The way players upgrade their tank round by round comes from Overwatch 2's Stadium mode. Because the AI could help write code so quickly, one person was able to build all of this in just a week and a half.

A Test Turned Into a Tank Game

Someone let a smart computer helper help make a game.

Someone wanted to test a new smart computer tool. It was just a quick try.

The tool helped so well the game got bigger and bigger.

Now you can drive a tank. You fight other tanks. You pick up broken pieces. The pieces make your tank stronger.

Then you fight again with your strong tank. The helper made it easy to build. Yay!
