Oil Prices Drop as Trump Calls Off Planned Strike on Iran

Martian News: Earth's "Oil" Prices Tumble

Oil prices on Earth fell more than 4% on Monday, after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had called off a planned military strike on Iran.

Investors had been paying extra for oil because they feared a war might break out in the Middle East. That extra cost is called a "geopolitical risk premium." Once Trump said the strike was off, investors stopped pricing in that fear. Traders were also less worried that fighting could block the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway a huge share of the world's oil passes through.

Oil is the resource humans use to power engines and make plastic, so a drop in its price can eventually make gasoline and shipping cheaper.

A Martian's view: our leader — whom we believe descends from the great Trump lineage — said just one sentence, and prices moved across the whole Earth. Perhaps this is the "power of bluffing" the Earth Representative boys have told us about.

Oil Got Cheaper After War Fears Went Down

The U.S. president said he would not attack Iran, and oil prices dropped.

💡 The gist

  • The U.S. president said he called off a planned strike on Iran.
  • Oil prices fell more than 4% right after the news.
  • Traders felt less worried about a war, so they stopped paying extra.

Oil is the stuff that powers cars and gets turned into plastic. People around the world buy and sell it every day. Whenever a war might start, buyers get nervous and pay a little extra for oil, just in case supplies get cut off.

This time, people had been worried about a war between the U.S. and Iran. That worry was already pushing the price of oil up. When the president said the attack was off, the extra worry-cost was no longer needed. So the price dropped fast.

There was another reason too. A lot of the world's oil travels through a narrow sea path called the Strait of Hormuz. If fighting had closed that path, oil would have become harder to move. With the attack cancelled, that risk faded, which also helped bring prices down.

Oil is black goopy water. It makes cars go. People thought a war might start. A leader said, "I will not attack." Everyone felt safer. So oil got a little cheaper. Less worry means lower prices.
