What happened

Researchers have described a new feathered dinosaur from western Liaoning, China. They named it Norellraptor barsboldi, a small predatory dinosaur. Its nearly complete skeleton measures 57 centimeters long. Parts of its plumage remain as fossil impressions.

The fossil came from the Lower Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation. Those rocks date to roughly 120 million years ago. A local farmer found the specimen near Lamadong Town. The fossil was donated to the Hebei GEO University museum in 2023. The study appeared in Nature Communications on September 29, 2026.

Why it looks four-winged

Norellraptor belongs to the microraptorines. These were small, feathered predators close to birds. Some microraptorines carried long feathers on their arms and legs. The new fossil preserves plumage near the arm, tail, and hindlimbs.

The forelimb probably had asymmetric flight feathers. That arrangement helps explain the familiar four-winged appearance. The phrase describes feathered front and back limbs. It does not prove four separate wings made of bone. The fossil is not clear enough to measure every feather precisely.

The larger question

Birds and microraptorines share several features linked with flight. Scientists have debated why those similarities exist. One idea says both groups inherited one flight plan from a common ancestor. Another says each group developed similar features separately.

This question matters because the order of body changes can reveal how flight evolved. Similar parts do not always come from the same developmental process. Different animals can face similar pressures and arrive at similar shapes.

What the study found

The researchers compared flight-related traits across an evolutionary tree. They tracked 194 traits in microraptorine evolution. Fifty-seven also appeared in the bird lineage. That is about 30 percent.

However, the traits appeared in different orders. The result supports a step-by-step assembly of aerial features in microraptorines. It also challenges the idea of one shared developmental pattern. The authors argue that different selective pressures probably shaped the two groups. This is evidence for convergent evolution, not proof of one inherited flight machine.

The team also examined a forearm bone under a microscope. Two growth lines suggested that the animal lived at least three years. Its bone growth pattern may have differed from patterns in birds.

What remains uncertain

The fossil cannot show exactly how Norellraptor moved through the air. Researchers cannot tell whether it powered flight, glided, or used another behavior. The feather traces are incomplete. The growth evidence also comes from one specimen.

What comes next

More fossils can test whether this pattern was common. Researchers especially need more feathers, bones, and growth studies. Those comparisons may show how many flying dinosaur groups built their aerial bodies independently.

💡 The gist

  • A nearly complete fossil shows a small, feathered dinosaur.
  • Feathers covered parts of its arms and legs.
  • Its flight features formed in a different order from birds.

The discovery

Scientists named the dinosaur Norellraptor barsboldi. It was found in Liaoning, China. The fossil came from rocks formed about 120 million years ago. The skeleton is 57 centimeters long. Feather marks remain near its arms, tail, and legs.

A local farmer found the fossil. It reached a university museum in 2023. The research paper appeared in Nature Communications in 2026.

Why it looked unusual

Norellraptor was a microraptorine. Microraptorines were small meat-eating dinosaurs. They were close relatives of birds. Some had long feathers on their arms and legs.

This made Norellraptor look four-winged. That phrase describes feathered limbs. It does not prove four bony wings. Scientists also do not know exactly how the animal used its feathers.

What the comparison showed

Researchers compared the dinosaur with birds and other relatives. They listed 194 body features. About 30 percent also appeared in the bird group. However, those features appeared in different orders.

The order matters. It shows how a body may have changed over time. The two groups may have built flight features separately. Scientists call this convergent evolution.

The team also studied a forearm bone. Growth lines suggested the animal lived at least three years. Its bone growth did not simply match bird growth.

What remains unknown

The feather marks are incomplete. Researchers cannot say whether the dinosaur flapped, glided, or did both. More fossils and bone studies are needed. They can test whether this unusual pattern was common.

A Little Dinosaur Had Feathers Front and Back

📰 Full story: The Four-Winged Look Came from a Different Flight History

fossil(N/A)

Very old remains that became hard like stone.

Norellraptor barsboldi(N/A)

The name of this small feathered dinosaur.

A little dinosaur

Long ago, a small dinosaur lived in China. Its name was Norellraptor barsboldi. It was a little feathered dinosaur.

Feathers grew near its front legs. Feathers also grew near its back legs. That made it look like it had four wings.

What scientists know

Scientists studied its bones and feather marks. The marks are not clear enough. We do not know if it truly flew.

The dinosaur had some body parts like a bird. But those parts appeared in a different order. The dinosaur and birds may have built flying bodies separately.

What happens next

More fossils can help answer the question. Scientists want to learn how the feathers worked. They also want to see how the bones grew.
