A Crocodilian With a Missing Snout Was Hidden in Sphinx Stone
Herugavialis cairensis
The scientific name for the newly recognized extinct crocodilian.
Mokattam Formation
A 45-million-year-old rock formation in Egypt.
gavial
A crocodilian relative with a long, narrow snout.
What was found
Scientists have recognized a new extinct crocodilian from Egypt. The animal is Herugavialis cairensis, a newly named species. Its fossil came from the 45-million-year-old Mokattam Formation. Limestone from the same formation was used to build the Great Sphinx of Giza, Egypt’s famous stone monument. The skull is nearly complete, but the tip of its snout is missing. The study appeared in Royal Society Open Science.
Why the old label changed
The fossils were recovered in the 1920s. Researchers then classified them as Tomistoma. That group includes the living false gharial. The fossil looked similar from the outside, so the old identification seemed reasonable.
A team from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, and Egypt later studied the fossils again. Paul Burke of the Swedish Museum of Natural History led the work. The researchers used CT scans to inspect the skull’s hidden spaces. They also compared skull measurements from living and fossil gavials.
Those comparisons showed several important differences. The fossil was not simply another Tomistoma. It represented a separate branch. The researchers named a new genus, Herugavialis, and a new species, Herugavialis cairensis. The case shows why old museum fossils can still produce new discoveries.
Life beside an ancient sea
Gavials are crocodilian relatives with long, narrow snouts. Only two living species remain today. They live in freshwater across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Fossils show that gavials once lived across much of the world. Their record stretches back more than 100 million years. Many fossil gavials lived in shallow marine settings.
Herugavialis lived when shallow seas covered much of the region around northern Egypt. It was not the only gavial there. At least two other gavial species also lived in Egypt at that time. The new crocodilian may have been a predator along the coast.
A missing snout and a meaningful name
The broken snout created an unusual link with the Great Sphinx. The researchers named the genus after Heru, an ancient Egyptian god who may have inspired the monument. The link is a coincidence, not evidence that the animal and the statue were connected directly. The scientific case rests on skull anatomy and comparisons with other fossils.
Why the study matters
The study adds another branch to the gavial family tree. It also strengthens the picture of a diverse crocodilian community around the ancient Mediterranean. Researchers say that diversity changed with global temperature and sea level. Crocodilians later disappeared from the region when the Mediterranean largely dried, about 6 million years ago.
The result also shows how technology can reopen an old question. A fossil collected nearly a century ago gained a new identity after researchers examined its inner structure. Reclassification can change how scientists understand where these animals lived and how their lineages developed.
What remains unknown
The study focuses mainly on the skull. It does not establish the animal’s full body length, exact behavior, or diet. It also cannot show why the snout tip was lost. More fossils and wider comparisons may clarify those questions. Future work can test how many gavial lineages lived around the Mediterranean and how their history changed as seas and climates shifted.

💡 The gist
- The fossil is about 45 million years old.
- It came from rock used for the Great Sphinx.
- CT scans showed it was a different crocodile.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is Egypt’s famous stone monument. The fossil came from the same rock formation. Scientists found the fossils in the 1920s.
They first thought the skull belonged to Tomistoma. Tomistoma includes the living false gharial. The fossil looked similar from the outside. That made the first label seem correct.
The new team studied the skull with CT scans. CT scans make pictures of the inside. The team also measured the skull and compared it with other gavials. These checks found differences inside the head. The differences were too large for the old label.
The team named the crocodile Herugavialis cairensis. It was a new species. It also belonged to a new genus. A genus is a group of very closely related species.
This crocodile was a gavial. Gavials have thin, long snouts. Today, only two gavial species are alive. They live in freshwater in South and Southeast Asia. Long ago, gavials lived in many parts of the world. Some lived in shallow seas.
Around 45 million years ago, shallow water covered much of northern Egypt. Herugavialis may have hunted near the coast. At least two other gavial species lived in Egypt then.
The fossil’s snout tip was missing. The Great Sphinx also has a missing nose tip. Scientists named the new genus after Heru, an ancient Egyptian god. The name is a coincidence. The skull’s structure made the scientific case.
The study reminds us to revisit old fossils. New tools can reveal hidden details. Scientists still do not know the animal’s full size or behavior. More fossils may answer those questions.
The Crocodile With a Missing Nose

A very old crocodile was found in stone near Egypt’s famous Sphinx.
fossil
An old animal part saved in stone.
CT scan
Pictures that show inside a head.
Herugavialis cairensis
The new name for the old crocodile.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is a giant stone statue in Egypt. Scientists studied a fossil from the same kind of rock. A fossil is an old animal part saved in stone.
Scientists named the crocodile Herugavialis cairensis (the crocodile’s new name). It lived about 45 million years ago. At first, scientists thought it belonged to another kind.
New CT scans made pictures inside its head. The pictures showed different shapes. So, scientists gave it a new kind name.
The crocodile’s nose tip was missing. The Sphinx also has a missing nose tip. Scientists named it after Heru, an old Egyptian god.
Long-nosed crocodiles lived near ancient water. That water was shallow. Today, close relatives live in freshwater in Asia. Scientists still do not know how big this crocodile was. More fossils may help answer that question.
