Most plants don't grow alone. Underground, they form partnerships with fungi that attach to their roots, extending thin thread-like structures called hyphae deep into the soil. These fungal threads reach far beyond what a plant's own roots could ever cover, drawing in water and nutrients the plant needs. In exchange, the plant shares sugars it makes through photosynthesis. This partnership, known as a mycorrhizal symbiosis, has been recognized as essential for decades.

Until now, though, no one had been able to study this network in its natural, undisturbed form. Digging into soil to look for the delicate fungal threads tends to tear them apart, making it nearly impossible to record what the network actually looks like underground.

Viewing the network without breaking it

Researchers have now found a way to capture a three-dimensional view of these underground fungal networks without disturbing the plant's roots or the surrounding soil. That means scientists can finally see how the threads spread through the ground and connect to roots in their natural arrangement.

Soil has long been treated as a kind of black box in plant biology. This new ability to look inside it intact could help reveal exactly how plants and fungi communicate and trade resources underground.

Plants don't survive alone underground. Many of them team up with fungi called mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi grow thin threads, called hyphae, that stretch deep into the soil. The threads reach places a plant's own roots could never reach on their own. They pull in water and nutrients from far away and pass them along to the plant. In return, the plant shares sugar it makes using sunlight, through a process called photosynthesis. It's a fair trade, and both sides need it to grow well.

Scientists have known this partnership matters for decades. But there was a big problem: nobody could actually see what the network looked like in real life. Whenever someone dug into the soil to study it closely, the thin threads tore apart almost instantly. That meant the natural shape of the network stayed a mystery, hidden underground where no one could observe it directly.

Now researchers have found a way around that problem. They can capture a full 3D picture of the fungal network without digging up the roots or disturbing the soil around them. This matters a lot, because it lets scientists finally see the threads exactly as they grow in real life: how far they spread, which direction they take, and exactly where they connect to the roots.

Soil has always been hard to study because people simply couldn't see inside it. This new method changes that. By keeping the network intact, scientists can start to understand, in much more detail, how plants and fungi actually communicate and trade resources with each other underground.
