X-ray Spacecraft Detects 36-Million-Degree 'Breath' of an Ancient Black Hole

Scorching gas from the early universe

An X-ray spacecraft has detected blisteringly hot gas, measured at 36 million degrees, streaming from the surroundings of one of the earliest known supermassive black holes. The gas dates back to just 2 billion years after the Big Bang, placing it among the youngest cosmic giants ever observed in this way.

What is a quasar?

The object observed is a quasar — an intensely bright cosmic body powered by a supermassive black hole actively feeding on surrounding matter. As material spirals inward, it heats up dramatically, and some of that superheated gas is blasted outward. Astronomers describe this outflow as the quasar's "exhaust fumes" or, more poetically, its breath.

Why it matters

The existence of such a massive, energetic black hole so early in the universe's history is itself remarkable. Directly detecting the hot gas it expels gives astronomers a rare, direct look at how these earliest black holes grew so fast and how they may have shaped the surrounding cosmos.

A quasar forms when a supermassive black hole pulls in gas and dust from around it. As that material swirls inward, it gets heated to incredible temperatures, and some of it shoots back outward instead of falling in. That outward blast of super hot gas is what the spacecraft detected.

This matters because the universe was still very young, only 2 billion years old, when this black hole was already this big and this active. Scientists have long wondered how black holes could grow so large so quickly. By directly catching the hot gas it pushed out, astronomers get real evidence of how much energy these early black holes released into the space around them.

There is a special space camera. It looks for hot X-rays. The camera found a very old black hole. A black hole is a hole in space that sucks things in. When it sucks stuff in, things spin fast and get hot. So hot it was 36 million degrees. A warm bath is only about 100 degrees. So this was way, way hotter. Some of the hot gas shot back out, like a breath. That is the black hole's "breath." This black hole was there just 2 billion years after space began. That is super early. Wow, it grew big so fast!
