A Fossil Forgotten for 80 Years Turns Out to Be a New Predator

An Overlooked Fossil, Rediscovered

A fossil that sat unexamined for nearly 80 years has turned out to belong to a previously unknown relative of crocodiles. Found in what is now New Mexico, the specimen has been named Eosphorosuchus lacrimosa. It lived around 210 million years ago, during the Triassic period.

Built to Tackle Bigger Prey

About the size of a jackal, the animal had a reinforced skull and powerful jaw muscles. Its short snout suggests it was built to take on prey larger than itself.

Why It Took So Long to Notice

The fossil appears to have been stored away without close study soon after it was first collected. When researchers recently re-examined the bones, they found features that didn't match any known species, leading to the new classification. The team says museum collections likely hold more overlooked discoveries like this one.

A Fossil Sat Ignored for 80 Years — Then Scientists Found a New Predator

An old fossil turned out to be a brand-new kind of ancient animal.

💡 The gist

  • A fossil found in the US sat unstudied for almost 80 years.
  • Scientists took a fresh look and found it belonged to an unknown animal.
  • It's now named Eosphorosuchus, a predator from 210 million years ago.

This animal was about the size of a jackal, a wild dog relative. Its skull was extra strong, and its jaw muscles were powerful. That build helped it take down prey bigger than itself. So why did nobody notice for 80 years? When the fossil was first found, no one studied it closely, so it just sat in storage. Recently, scientists compared its bones to known species and saw differences nobody had spotted before. That's how they knew it was something new. Researchers think museum shelves probably hold more forgotten fossils just like this one, waiting for someone to look again.

It was about dog-sized. Its head bone was very strong. It could fight bigger animals. Scientists think more secret bones are still hiding.
